Our Story

In 1968, Donovan Smith purchased a long-established Brighouse opticians practice. Over many years he nurtured and grew the business, moving to our current larger premises on Bethel Street.

In 1985, Donovan hired Robert Foulds as a second optometrist and offered him a partnership soon after. In 1999, Donovan retired, leaving Robert and his wife Carol to take over the business.

The practice has grown year upon year and Robert and Carol’s daughter Molly has followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming one of the practice’s Optometrists and more recently, a director also. With this, the practice maintains the core family values that it has been built upon.

The practice employs four qualified Optometrists, two qualified Dispensing Opticians and three Optical Assistants. Donovan Smith has built a reputation as the most trusted and best-equipped opticians in the area, and is recommended by local GPs, Ophthalmic specialists and surgeons. Continuous investment into the latest technology including OCT, Clarus ultra-widefield imaging, Optomap, and much more, allows the practice to offer retinal scans, and a comprehensive retinal health check
