Robert joined the Donovan Smith practice in 1985 as an optometrist, and later became a partner in the business. Since Donovan retired in 1999, Robert and Carol have run and nurtured the practice, which has grown to employ four optometrists, three dispensing opticians and four optical assistants. Robert also has City and Guilds qualification for Diabetic Eye Screening and has worked for many years on the NHS Local Optical Committee, Yorkshire Optical Committee and at Bradford University teaching contact lens fitting to the undergraduates. Carol is also very ‘hands on’ in the lab, glazing and making spectacles.

When he’s not checking eyes at Donovan Smith, he enjoys playing the piano, fitness training and campervan-ing with his dog!

Susan Adamson, FBDO (Dispensing Optician)
Susan qualified as a dispensing optician back in 1980, and went on to manage a small group practice in central Bradford. After having a family, she worked for a local independent practice before joining Donovan Smith in 2004. Her many years of expertise ensure that our customers are fitted with the most comfortable frames and lenses possible, from the original dispense, all the way to presenting you with your new spectacles. She enjoys walking in the Yorkshire Dales, singing and spending time with friends and family.
Andrea Turner (Optical Assistant)
Andrea joined the practice in 2013 having worked for an independent practice in Halifax and Lindley for ten years and taken some time out to have a family. She now throws herself into all aspects of spectacle dispensing and has enthusiastically learnt to glaze in our lab. Her hobbies include yoga and music, together with cheering on her two sons playing football.
Helen Jackson (Optical Assistant)
Helen followed her family into the optics industry and has gained lots of experience working for a range of local multiple and independent practices. Since joining us in 2003, Helen has quickly become our expert in contact lens hygiene and handling tuition and visual field testing, in addition to helping out with dispensing and reception duties. She’s a keen Halifax Town fan but also enjoys watching her son play football for Northowram Juniors!

Jane joined us in 2013 after working at another independent practice for over twenty years. She now handles all the NHS contractual and administrative tasks and ensures everyone is greeted with a smile and a friendly welcome.
