In 1968, Donovan Smith bought up a Brighouse opticians practice after the death of its owner, Noel Green. Over many years he nurtured and grew the business, moving to our current larger premises on Bethel Street.

In 1985, Donovan hired Robert Foulds as a second optometrist and offered him a partnership soon after. In 1999, Donovan eventually retired, leaving Robert and his wife Carol to take over the business.

The practice has continued to grow, and now employs four qualified optometrists, three dispensing opticians and four optical assistants. Donovan Smith has built a reputation as the most trusted and best-equipped opticians in the area, and is recommended by local GPs, specialists and surgeons. Investment in OCT and Optomap technologies has allowed the practice to offer retinal scans and ultra-wide retinal health checks.
